Cycling and the Circular Economy

Everything you need to know about the circular economy in the cycling world and why buying second hand is the best choice for you and the planet.

With a landmark climate conference such as COP26 happening right on our doorstep, what better opportunity to share a little bit about our business model and how it benefits our planet.

At Cycletrade, we are proud to buy, sell, and exchange bikes and parts in a way that feeds into the circular economy - the only possible model of consumption if we want to preserve a habitable earth.

We are committed to doing our part for the environment, but we need your help to make an even bigger impact. So follow our special COP26 blog to discover how we can make cycling even more sustainable together.

What is the Circular Economy?

What makes the circular economy different from traditional “linear” business models is the focus on extending product life

As the word suggests, the linear economy has a start and end point, usually with an item going through a “make-use-dispose” process that sees it ending up in landfill, taking up space and often releasing toxic substances into the environment.

Re-Distributing Bicycle Components

We know it’s hard to picture this, but try and imagine the millions of tons of products manufactured every day across the world, with ecosystems being destroyed and enormous amounts of CO2 being emitted in the process.

You can see how our planet would benefit from an alternative model that keeps items into circulation, instead of throwing them away.

This is what the circular economy does. Resources are kept in use for as long as possible, extracting the maximum value from them while in use, then recovering and regenerating products and materials at the end of each service life.

What does “Circular Economy” mean in cycling?

This is our favourite part.

We all know cycling is one of the main things we can do to tackle our carbon footprint and encouraging active travel is up there on the COP26 agenda, together with halting deforestation and transitioning to renewables.

In fact, a recent Oxford University study found that emissions from cycling can be more than 30 times lower for each trip than driving a fossil fuel car, and even about ten times lower than driving an electric one.

But using a circular economy model can make biking even greener.

At Cycletrade, our main objective is to prolong the life of your bike parts. In other words, we buy surplus stock and second-hand gear that would otherwise be headed for the bin. We then refurbish all the parts to ensure every component we sell is reliable and looking its best.

We have seen first-hand how many surplus bicycle parts are produced daily, but we also know many businesses and customers who would be happy to purchase second-hand components. We are here to bridge the gap!

Why you should buy and sell refurbished bike parts?

Now we know why refurbishing and reusing is important, but what’s in it for you?

  • Buying second hand saves money

Buying refurbished parts brings considerable savings, as you can purchase items at up to 20% to 40% cheaper than the list price. Bicycle shops looking for bits and pieces get even further discounts on Cycletrade refurbished gear. Saving money whilst reducing waste, we’re in!

    • It extends the component’s lifespan

Purchasing second hand or surplus stock parts means you’re extending an item's life-span. Imagine something that has been sitting idle for years back out on the road doing what it was designed for. Now that’s cool!

      • It helps promote sustainability

Buying used can give others confidence to do so, meaning you will have a much bigger impact than just buying for yourself. Spread the word!

        Making Cycling Sustainable
        • What is useless to some can be valuable to others

What you may not be using, could be very useful to someone else. The good news is that at Cycletrade, we make it a hassle-free experience to sell your surplus bike parts.

          •  Unique finds

Scouring for second-hand components you could get your hands on some rare gems. Besides, buying refurbished parts is usually the only way to find like for like replacements!

            • Relieves pressure from the global supply chain

From Brexit and Covid-19, we have learnt that if the global supply chain is strained, the customer does feel it. With rising import costs, it is worth looking for a new way to buy and sell bicycle components by re-distributing.

At Cycletrade, we aim to be at the forefront of the circular economy. As the largest company of our kind in the UK, we buy and sell a wide range of second-hand premium bikes and bike parts and all our products are certified refurbished

Ultimately everyone benefits from buying (and selling) second hand, even when it comes to biking gear.
